Take Over, 2018
I distorted these various spaces to function as an illusion of fact. They convey a sense of appearing as a real place in reality through the editing process based on addition, displacement, & erasure. Causing the viewer to question and carefully examine each image until they realize what is supposed to be there versus what is not there.
This project was initially inspired by the tv show Black Mirror, season 1 ep. 2 “Fifteen Million Merits” (my favorite). The main character has a intense speech near the end of the episode, “All we know is fake fodder and buying shit. That’s how we speak to each other, how we express ourselves is buying shit.” This made me question and compare our fabricated society to this fictional society. I came up with an overwhelming theme of industrialization and consumerism. How - all we do is take what’s real to us and turn it into something to be consumed. Authenticity is not real. Everything is a commodity to be consumed. I played around with advertisements especially, because they are so inescapable in our everyday life. We are constantly making room for bigger corporations to sell to us. All we are left with is this urge to buy, buy, buy!!!
