Trey-jon is eight years old. He is a second grader. Trey-jon also comes from broken families, his parent is a single mother, and he lives in public housing. He wants to be older and intelligent like his older siblings because to him, they are really cool. Trey-jon was photographed in front of his living room wall which displays his family’s religion and belief that God will help them succeed.
After seeing these portraits, how do they make you feel?:
“I don’t really know. I think I look really smart.”
Monae is a twenty year old who describes herself as someone who is very family oriented and likes to have fun with her close friends. Monae was photographed in the living room of her parents’ house as she is most comfortable around her family when her surroundings are quiet, and she is not the center of attention. She is now living back at home after enduring a financial hardship living alone and being a full time college student. She is enrolled in school to be a medical assistant and medical administrator. Although Monae is studying for a different career, her actual dream is to be a paralegal or police officer.

“The portraits changed how I see my future a little bit. I feel like I should take myself more seriously now that I could actually see myself as a police officer now.”
Robert is a seventeen year old high school junior. He comes from broken families, his father is incarcerated, and he lives in public housing with his mother and two siblings. Robert has played football for years, it is a huge part of his life that keeps him focused and feeling like a completely other person when he plays.

“I feel like these pictures look like a stepping stone to what I’m going to be doing. Next step is college, football, and then to the pros.”
